Virtual Life: What happened while you were away from your desk

banner_social_media_generic-cfCurrently, on line content life is reckoned in hours. That metric may soon dwindle to minutes. Who are these multitudes crying out for content, that seem to inhabit cyberspace? Personally, I believe that they are actually a reflection of the ‘social media industry’, making self-fulfilling pronouncements. What better way is there it boost the demand for services than proclaim that the demand is essential to business.

Yes, there is a huge appetite for on line content which needs to be satisfied daily by aesthetically framed information and entertainment, but I just don’t believe that there’s an hourly urgency for fresh content in most areas outside of news and weather reportage. If what you’re posting about isn’t subject to rapid fluctuations, like stock prices, then what is the point of posting hourly? Putting another trite internet meme on your company Facebook page won’t attract the attention that brings home the bacon.

Recommendations of posting content several times daily can result in input overload and attention fatigue, which can trivialize your brand. If we presume to rank our social importance by our digital presence, we need to be careful of how we present ourselves.

NY Faerie Festival raised funds and spirits for ACS Relay for Life

Faerie Festival fun at June First Friday

Faerie Festival fun at June First Friday

This year I arranged to offer New York Faerie Festival tickets as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  The A C S received 15% of all revenue from sales through joint promotional efforts.  In addition to providing advance ticket sale kits to their volunteer teams in  Tioga and Broome counties,  I coordinated appearances of the Team Faerie to entertain and sell fundraiser tickets at four local events:

Earth Fest 2011, 4/30/11, MacArthur Park, Binghamton, NY

Tioga County Relay for Life, 5/13/11, The Hickories Park, Owego,NY

First Friday Art Walk, 6/3/11, at IMAGICKA on Hawley & Washington Sts., Binghamton, NY

Greater Binghamton Relay for Life, 6/17/11, MacArthur Park, Binghamton, NY

Figures from the July post-festival recap meeting revealed that the campaign was a great success, boosting one-day admission advance sales by 40%.

Self portrait in Photoshop

This composite portrait was created as a promotional piece for Fantastechnology, my business as a marketing consultant. Using several photos of myself, I created captions and a background that evokes an multifaceted professional with a spectrum of versatile skills, imagination and a sense of humor.  Manipulating graphics in Adobe Photoshop is a basic skill set for web design.  It was a lot of fun to explore a basic tool like this.
